To Conclude GEN2243f18

As the semester comes to an end, I can’t help but to look back and reflect on the various things I’ve learned. When the school year started, I was extremely intimidated. I felt as if the work asked of us was confusing and complex. However, after the first week, I became accustomed to the work load. I was not scheduled to be in this course from the start, which made me fall behind from the rest of the students in the class. I was not particularly fond of the idea of creating a Twitter for my major and updating it/ posting on it daily. However, as the semester went on I started to understand professors Calderwood’s method to his madness. He wanted us to create a personal learning network for ourselves. Posting about your career on social media is an easy way to network and potentially, get offered job opportunities. Unlike many other classes, this class is one that each and every college student can benefit from. I’ve learned that social media is a crucial part of job interviews. You m

Personalizing Your Own Website

The main topic covered in class two weeks ago was regarding the Hololens and Mixed Reality . Hololens is a virtual reality headset with transparent lenses for an augmented reality experience. According to Microsoft, HoloLens is a “fully untethered, see-through holographic computer.” Mixed reality, sometimes referred to as hybrid reality, is the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time. Both the HoloLens and Mixed Reality headsets are part of the same "Mixed Reality" platform, but there are plenty of differences as well as similarities to be aware of. HoloLens is an AR headset, whereas all the new Mixed Reality headsets are VR. The past week in class I presented my app smackdown. The app I chose to present for my app smackdown was Speech Sounds . Speech Sounds is a 10 dollar app used to help speech student identify different sounds. This is important in the

A Scope on Virutal Reality

In class two weeks ago my classmates and I presented our second, “App Smackdown.” In other words, we were asked to find one useful app regarding our major and present it to the class. As a health science major, it made sense for me to choose an app about the human anatomy. The app I chose to use was, Complete Anatomy . This app displayed every part of the body with its name and description. I was able to zoom in on one body part specifically, in order to prevent confusion. I found it very interesting that the app had a virtual reality option. Ironically, right after my classmates and I presented, Professor Calderwood showed us a few virtual reality tools as well. A few of these devices were, Quiver , the Merge Cube and Google Cardboard .  Google Cardboard is a virtual reality platform developed by Google . It is used with a head mount for a smartphone. Named for its fold-out cardboard viewer, the platform is as a low-cost system to encourage interest and development in virtu

Presentation Tools

During class this week we reviewed APA formatting for our paper due in 2 weeks. APA style is a writing style and format for academic documents such as scholarly journals, articles and books. In our class, Exploring your Digital Portfolio, our next paper must be in APA format. Along with the paper, we are required to do a presentation. Professor Calderwood displayed numerous different presentation tools such as, Haiku Deck , Prezi , Google Slides , Power Point and Sway . Each source provides similar tools to create an adequate slide presentation. For my paper I chose to use Power Point. At first, I attempted using Prezi but it seemed too complex for me. Power Point is simple and easily accessible for me to do my presentation. Pixton , Animoto , Adobe Spark and Powtoon are video creation services that produce videos and slide shows. These tools are also helpful when creating a presentation.         After having so much trouble using Prezi as a presentation tool I decided to

In class this past week we spoke about social media etiquette and watched videos on what not to post on social media. In one of the videos, a man was going for an interview and when the employer searched his Facebook , unprofessional posts came up. He posted pictures of him drinking at parties and leaving work early. Ultimately, this was the reason he did not get the job. We also spoke about Social Media hacks and how everything you post is stored. For example, two years ago Snapchat got hacked and the hacker leaked the content Snapchat had stored. Snapchat is known for information disappearing after 24 hours, however, this is not the case. Through the website, Pnowed I was able to find out that two of the websites I've used from my email have been hacked. This is something to take into consideration when storing things on different apps or social media. We split up into groups and made a power point slide explaining the pros and cons of different apps. Apps such as, Instagram ,

In class this past week we each did "App Smack downs." In other words, we chose one app related to our major and presented it to the class for two minutes. My app is called, English Pronunciation IPA . As a Speech Pathology major this app helps me to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet that is used to identify speech disorders. There are 44 symbols that make up the Phonetic Alphabet. This app pronounces each symbol for me and tests me on the pronunciation and how it's used . We were also greeted by Patricia Donahue in class last week. Patricia Donahue visited us from the career center at Stockton University . Specifically, Patricia works in the Health Science office. She came to class to inform us about Windows software called, LinkedIn and to help us learn how to build our own personal brand through social media. Personal branding is, the practice of marketing ourselves and our careers as a brand. It is important to be clear and consistent when bran

One Note & Paper.li

Having the internet and social media at the tips of your fingers at all times is extremely useful in this generation. It is important to take advantage of this and learn about the different tools each software offers. Microsoft offers Onenote . “Onenote is a computer program for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. It gathers users' notes (handwritten or typed), drawings, screen clippings and audio commentaries. Notes can be shared with other users over the Internet.” Another very useful website is Paper.li . This website is perfect for networking and to turn specific content into articles or news letters. Personally,my Paper.li is all about creating my own personal learning network for my major, Speech Language Pathology. This website helps me find different articles and resources. I can use to these articles and resources not only to learn more about my chosen career path but to share with others on other website such as, Twitter. To help give us insight
